Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Rutu,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to grab the opportunity working as a volunteer at the museum. Actually, I am very interested to work free for the community, as it is going to be a very useful work for me to experience. However, history is very close to my heart and one of the most important reason to get an unpaid job there is to share my knowledge to the society and the visitors. To be very honest, I got many awards until now from various competitons, where history plays a role, such as history story telling, rapid fire questions about the museum and many more. I recently got graduated with 98.97 percentage overall, with a first rank in social science and wanted to share my knowledge to others. I have 9 months of a vacation starting from tomorrow in which I can do an unpaid work at the museum and let me know if I am required to get any certifications done for the eligibility. Hoping for an early response from your side.
Yours faithfully,
Vraj Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the main purpose by applying to volunteer and explaining your interest in history, your achievements, and your availability for a nine-month vacation. The details about awards and your social-science result help support your suitability. However, the skills and personal qualities you could bring are not clearly described: achievements suggest knowledge, but you do not explain how you would use it with visitors or mention qualities such as communication or reliability. Your availability is also broad; giving specific days or hours would make this part more useful. The request about certifications is relevant, but the letter would be more complete if it directly asked the director to consider your application.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The ideas are generally relevant and follow a sensible order: you introduce your application, explain your interest, give evidence of your background, and state when you are available. Linking expressions such as “However” and “To be very honest” help connect points, but some transitions do not express the relationship accurately, and the letter is presented as one long paragraph. This makes the shift from motivation to qualifications and availability less clear. Use separate paragraphs for these stages and choose more precise links, such as “In addition” when adding evidence. A clearer closing request and sign-off would also give the letter a more complete progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “volunteer,” “community,” “visitors,” “awards,” and “eligibility,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “first rank in social science.” However, several word choices and collocations sound unnatural or imprecise: “grab the opportunity working,” “work free,” and “share my knowledge to the society” do not express your ideas idiomatically. “Competitons” is also misspelled. Aim for natural application-letter language and check spelling; for example, describe your interest as a wish to contribute to the museum and share your knowledge with visitors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a sentence beginning “as it is going to be” and a longer sentence explaining your awards and academic result. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I am very interested to work” needs a different verb pattern, and “one of the most important reason” has a number-agreement error. The sentence beginning “I recently got graduated” also has an incorrect verb construction, while the long sentence about your vacation and certifications joins several ideas without clear punctuation. Practise verb patterns, singular/plural agreement, and breaking long sentences into controlled clauses.
