Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or Madam,

I am writing this to express my keen interest in voluntarily working at the museum. I saw your advertisement about the available job opportunity as a guide in today's newspaper and I would like to apply for that position as I am student and next year I am planning to join a course to be a tour guide.

I read the skills required for the job and most of them are pretty much aligned with mine. I am a very good communicator as well as a storyteller. My talkative side helps me to get easily connected with people. Moreover, I love to know about the history and different cultures.

I can start working as immediately as needed and I can work everyday except tuesday and thurday afternoon between 2PM to 5PM as I am having a class during that time. I look forward for an opportunity of an interview. Should you need any additional details, feel free to reach out.

Yours faithfully,

Misha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you explain your interest in museum work, identify relevant qualities, and state when you are available. The reason is clear and relevant: you saw the guide vacancy and hope to take a tour-guide course next year. You also support your application with communication and storytelling skills and an interest in history and cultures. The availability details are specific, although “everyday except Tuesday and Thursday afternoon” could be made clearer by stating your available days and hours directly. The skills section would be stronger if you briefly showed how you have used these qualities or how they would help visitors. Overall, the letter maintains a clear purpose and gives the director useful information.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: the opening states your purpose, the next paragraph presents your qualities, and the final paragraph covers availability and follow-up. This organisation makes the application easy to understand, and phrases such as “Moreover” and “Should you need any additional details” help connect ideas and signal the letter’s purpose. To make the progression more polished, clarify the availability sentence, which combines your start date, working days, and class schedule in a slightly confusing way. Also leave a space after the full stop in “people.Moreover.” The paragraphing is appropriate; more precise links between your skills and the museum role would make the development feel more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal application and includes relevant expressions such as “keen interest,” “communicator,” “storyteller,” and “additional details.” These choices help convey your motivation and suitability. However, some wording is imprecise or less natural for this context: “voluntarily working” is better expressed as “volunteering,” and “pretty much aligned with mine” sounds conversational and vague. “My talkative side” also does not present the quality as professionally as “interpersonal skills” would. Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than adding informal intensifiers. The meaning remains clear throughout, but more controlled formal phrasing would make the application sound more confident and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as I am student” and the conditional opening “Should you need any additional details.” Most of the message is understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I am student” needs an article (“a student”), and “I look forward for an opportunity” should use “look forward to.” The availability sentence also needs clearer grammatical construction: “I can work every day except Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., when I have class” would be more accurate. Check capitalisation of weekdays and punctuation around sentence boundaries. These corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your range of structures.
