Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the part-time work at the museum as a volunteer.

Last Sunday, I was reading a newspaper and found an advertisement related to the need of candidate who is interested in volunteer work. I really want to do this job as a part-time candidate. Actually, I have recently done my graduation and I am free for the next three months. Thus, doing a part-time not only helps me to utilise my summer wisely but also met people from different cultures, helping to know about other individuals’ lifestyle. Apart from gaining practical experience through unpaid work, gives me a chance to acquire knowledge about diverse religions.

Furthermore, I have valuable skills which a person needs to do any work, particularly teamwork, self-confidence and interpersonal. During my school days, I also worked in many school exhibitions. By participating in these activities, I acquired knowledge about importance of any religion culture as well as sense of responsibility.

I would really appreciate if you could give me an opportunity to do this unpaid work. I will be available all the times whenever you need me except from Sundays. Since I want to spend quality time with my family as well.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to receiving a positive response from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours sincerely,

Harjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, describe relevant skills such as teamwork and interpersonal abilities, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, while you mention 'teamwork' and 'interpersonal' skills, providing a brief, concrete example of how you applied these in your school exhibitions would have strengthened your application. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use transition signals such as 'Furthermore', 'Thus', and 'Apart from' to guide the reader through your points. While the flow is generally good, some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'Apart from gaining practical experience through unpaid work, gives me a chance...', where the grammatical structure disrupts the flow. Additionally, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking phrases would help the text feel more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'utilise', 'diverse', and 'interpersonal'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'need of candidate' instead of 'need for a candidate' and 'interpersonal' used as a noun rather than an adjective. You also use 'religion culture', which is slightly awkward. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that adjectives are used correctly to describe your skills. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'doing a part-time not only helps me... but also met people', where the verb tense is inconsistent. Another example is 'I would really appreciate if you could give me an opportunity', which is missing 'it' after 'appreciate'. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would improve your score.
