Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the voluntary/ unpaid work advertised by your Museum for the 2weeks exhibition from 13th to 26th may 2025.

I have a bachelors degree and have worked in similar roles in the past. I live within the community and have come to understand the role the museum plays as a tourist center, helping visitors understand the community and build a relationship with the artifacts. I am hardworking, flexible. have good communication skills , can act as an instructor and I already know my way around the museum and the community since I am a local. I remain calm under pressure and know how to coordinate a large group of people since the museum will be filled with people.

I am available from Monday 13th and would appreciate the opportunity to be of help to the museum and community.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Mary Featherington.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your motivation for volunteering, outline relevant skills such as communication and coordination, and provide your availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention being an instructor, expanding slightly on a specific past experience would have provided more depth. The tone is appropriate for a formal application, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To improve, ensure that each bullet point is supported by a little more detail to fully demonstrate your suitability for the role.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the purpose of the letter to your qualifications and finally your availability. Paragraphing is present, though the indentation and spacing are a bit inconsistent. You use some cohesive devices, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your skills and your availability is abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'In addition to this', 'Regarding my availability') would help connect your ideas more effectively and improve the overall readability of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'artifacts', 'coordinate', and 'exhibition' correctly. There are some minor issues with capitalization (e.g., 'Museum', 'may') and punctuation. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it is somewhat functional. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated vocabulary related to professional applications, such as 'contribute to', 'possess', or 'demonstrate'. Overall, the language used is appropriate for the context of a volunteer application.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am hardworking, flexible. have good communication skills', where the sentence structure is fragmented. Additionally, there are minor errors in capitalization and punctuation, such as '2weeks' (should be 'two-week') and '13th to 26th may' (should be 'May'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall accuracy. Focusing on sentence boundaries and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb will significantly improve your score.
