Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter in response to the advertisement regarding the hiring of an unpaid voluntary worker for the museum in The News Daily. Recently, I have completed my master's degree in History and I am looking for a work that can provide me an experience which will be helpful to kick start my professional journey. Moreover, I am free for 3 months before i start my job at The Art museum in Paris. So, I wanted to work in a museum to learn some skills which will come in handy. I am well versed in carbon dating, record keeping and human interactions. It will be easy for me to hold the grip of day-to-day operations in your museum. Moreover, I had received a gold medal in research and development area for my excellent work on artifacts from The Mughals time and making a detailed report for the same. I am available to work from Monday to Saturday in the mornings every week. In addition to that, I live near the museum and daily commute will not affect my working hours.
I look forward to you prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Tarunjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills such as carbon dating and research, and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how your specific research experience with Mughal artifacts would directly benefit the museum's current projects. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs covering the required points, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition to that', and 'So' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat compressed; separating the introduction, the skills/motivation, and the availability into distinct paragraphs would improve the visual structure and flow. Additionally, ensure that referencing remains consistent throughout the text to maintain a smooth progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including terms like 'well versed', 'day-to-day operations', and 'artifacts'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'looking for a work' (should be 'looking for work' or 'a job') and 'hold the grip of' (which is slightly unnatural; 'grasp' or 'manage' would be better). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and appropriately for the context of a job application.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few grammatical slips, such as the lowercase 'i' in 'before i start' and the article error in 'The Mughals time' (should be 'the Mughal era'). Additionally, 'you prompt response' should be 'your prompt response'. While these errors are present, they are non-systematic and do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for small articles and pronoun capitalization to ensure a more polished final draft.
