Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to your job posting for part-time volunteer work. Therefore, I am willing to grab this opportunity.
Being a university student, I am suppose to pay a big amount of fee each year, and also, have to take care of other expenses. Despite of getting some assistance from my parents, I am facing difficulty in managing my daily expenses. So, an extra employment would likely assist me in paying my college fee at least.
As I have done my graduation in history, so I have immense knowledge in this subject, and would apparently help visitors in enhancing their concept of the traditions and background of our country, as that is the primary theme of your museum.
In case I get an opportunity to work at your museum, I would like to let you know my availability to volunteer. I will be available from 7 am until 3pm during the weekends. If required, I can also help you on Friday evenings after 5pm.
Thank you for your consideration, and do let me know if you have any further queries?
Your sincerely,
Manphool Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points effectively. You explain your motivation, highlight your history degree as a relevant skill, and provide specific availability. However, there is a slight misunderstanding of the task: you mention needing money for fees and seeking 'employment,' whereas the prompt specifically asks for 'voluntary/unpaid work.' This creates a slight contradiction in your tone, as voluntary work is typically done for experience or interest rather than financial gain. To improve, ensure your stated motivation aligns better with the nature of the role (e.g., gaining experience or contributing to the community).
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph addresses a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices like 'Despite of,' 'In case,' and 'Therefore,' though some of these are used slightly unnaturally or incorrectly. For instance, 'Therefore' at the start of the second sentence is a bit abrupt. The flow between ideas is generally clear, and the letter follows a standard formal structure. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words more naturally to connect your sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'opportunity,' 'assistance,' and 'traditions.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'grab this opportunity' is too informal for a formal letter, and 'done my graduation' is non-standard; 'graduated with a degree in' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'enhancing their concept' is slightly awkward; 'deepening their understanding' would be more precise. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score to the 6.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am suppose to' (should be 'supposed to'), 'Despite of' (should be 'Despite' or 'In spite of'), and 'Your sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). The punctuation in the final question is also incorrect, as it is a statement, not a question. While you attempt complex structures, the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and standard formal letter conventions will help improve your accuracy.
