Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to apply for a part-time, unpaid job at one of your museums located in Burnaby.

Volunteering at the museums is the best way to gain experience in the tourism industry, which can be beneficial in the future for finding overseas jobs. Moreover, I have a keen interest in interacting with people from different cultures, and I am happy to guide them as well as explore our culture through the museum.

For the last two years, I have been studying the tourism course, where I learned advanced-level skills for guiding tourists and behavioural styles when interacting with them. I believe those skills will be beneficial when dealing with them.

Due to classes on weekdays, I could not be available on weekdays. However, I promise to commit to volunteering on weekends, and I am open to working at flexible times.

I hope you will consider me for this position. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Arshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, outlined your relevant background in tourism, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on how your specific 'behavioural styles' would benefit the museum, perhaps by providing a concrete example of a situation you could handle. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For the last two years', and 'However' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which is essential for this task type.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'tourism industry', 'behavioural styles', and 'flexible times'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for a formal application. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more advanced vocabulary related to professional settings, such as 'contribute to', 'gain practical insight', or 'demonstrate proficiency'. Your current vocabulary is functional and clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to apply...' and 'Due to classes on weekdays, I could not be available...'. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is good. There are minor slips, such as 'Volunteering at the museums' (should be 'museum' as you are applying to one) and 'dealing with them' (which is slightly vague). However, these errors do not interfere with meaning. You have a good grasp of tense usage, particularly when discussing your studies and future availability.
