Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well.
My name is Alex, I am writing this letter to express my interest in working at the museum as a part-time volunteer. I would love this opportunity because it would be beneficial for my college application.
Nevertheless, I have always been keen in community work since childhood. That is because it teaches us valuable life lessons. For instance, while working at old age home care I learned a lot about the life stories and struggles the elderly did when they were young. In addition to this, it also boosts my college application for the arts field.
Furthermore, I have various skills and qualities that would make the perfect candidate for this work. Firstly, I am a very punctual and honest worker. Never in my life have I been late to school or any event. Secondly, I love teamwork as that boosts the unity of the company.
Therefore, I would like you to consider me for this job. I am available immediately, but can only work from Monday to Wednesday as the rest of the days I have school. I will be looking forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Alex Lona

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, provided relevant personal qualities, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for example, when mentioning your experience at an old age home, you could briefly describe a specific task you performed to better illustrate your suitability for museum work. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'In addition to this', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the use of 'Nevertheless' is slightly inappropriate in context, as it usually introduces a contrasting idea, whereas your second paragraph continues your previous point. Improving the precision of these linking words will help the flow of your writing. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different aspects of your application.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'beneficial', 'punctual', and 'candidate'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'struggles the elderly did', which would be more naturally phrased as 'struggles the elderly faced'. Additionally, 'old age home care' is slightly awkward; 'a care home for the elderly' would be more standard. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to museum work or volunteering would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few grammatical errors, such as 'keen in community work' (should be 'keen on') and 'the rest of the days I have school' (which is slightly informal). Punctuation is generally accurate, though ensure you maintain consistent formal tone throughout. The errors present do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher band, you should aim for greater accuracy in preposition use and more varied complex sentence structures.
