Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in part-time voluntary/unpaid work at your museum. As I live near your museum, it will not be hard to reach there in minutes. I would really enjoy working in the museum and am willing to do any work.
I am not only good at art and crafts but also at explaining as a guide to tourists. I worked in my school's museum when I was in 10th standard. Although I was a topper in my studies, my interest in arts led me to win the award.
I would relish this opportunity starting next week, Monday, as I will get my summer holidays from my school. I'll make sure to do all the tasks with honesty and dedication. It will be an emotional moment as I will enjoy my childhood days.
Hoping to get an optimistic response.
Kind regards,
Komal Babbar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your interest in the voluntary work, explain your relevant skills (art, crafts, and guiding), and provide your availability (starting next Monday). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the mention of winning an award is vague and could have been linked more explicitly to how it benefits the museum. Additionally, the final sentence about 'enjoying childhood days' is slightly off-topic for a professional application, as the focus should remain on your contribution to the museum rather than personal nostalgia. Overall, the task is fulfilled adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am not only... but also' and 'Although', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disconnected. To reach a higher band, you could use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly, such as 'Furthermore' or 'Consequently', to improve the overall progression of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary', 'dedication', and 'optimistic'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'reach there in minutes' (better: 'get there in minutes' or 'access the location') and 'explaining as a guide' (better: 'acting as a tour guide'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your use of topic-specific collocations related to museum work or volunteering would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'as I will get my summer holidays' and the concessive 'Although I was a topper'. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'reach there' (which is slightly unnatural) and the phrasing 'I will get my summer holidays from my school'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication. To improve, try incorporating a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or relative clauses, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
