Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir,
I am delighted to learn that your museum is hiring causal volunteers .As I have a keen interest in history and art, I am excited to apply for this opportunity.
The main reason I am interested in volunteering at your heritage centre is my strong passion for art and history.I believe your museum would provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about our cultural heritage.
Moreover, I possess strong communication and excellent customer service skills , which would be considered as the key elements for this position.
Furthermore,I work at The Home Depot mainly on weekdays,so I am available to volunteer on weekends from 9:00 am -5:00pm.Additionally,if I get fewer working ,I would be happy to volunteer on additional days , as the museum is only a five-minute walk from my home.
Thank you for considering my application . I look forward to hear from you.
Yours faithfully,
Harneet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the motivation for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are clearly presented, though the development is somewhat brief. For example, while you mention communication and customer service skills, providing a specific example of how these were used in a previous context would have strengthened the response. Overall, the letter is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' to link your points. However, the flow could be improved by varying these transitions, as some feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cultural heritage', 'opportunity', and 'volunteers'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'causal' instead of 'casual' and 'fewer working' which is grammatically incomplete. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the range of less common or more precise collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. The tone is consistently formal and appropriate for the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I look forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing') and punctuation issues, including missing spaces after periods and commas. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the communication remains effective. To improve, focus on verb patterns (e.g., 'look forward to + -ing') and ensure consistent spacing after punctuation marks to enhance the professional appearance of your writing.
