Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am delighted to learn that your museum is hiring causal volunteers . As I have a keen interest in history and art, I am excited to apply for this opportunity.
The main reason I am interested in volunteering at your heritage centre is my strong passion for art and history.I believe your museum would provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about our cultural heritage.
Moreover, I possess strong communication and excellent customer service skills ,which would be considered as the key elements for this position.
Furthermore, I work at The Home Depot mainly on weekdays, so I am available to volunteer on weekends from 9:00 am -5:00pm.Additionally, if I get fewer working hours ,I would be happy to volunteer on additional days , as the museum is only a five-minute walk from my home.
Thank you for considering my application .I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Harneet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills such as communication and customer service, and provided specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on how your specific skills would benefit the museum, rather than just listing them. For example, explaining how your customer service experience would help in greeting visitors or managing inquiries would add more depth to your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly fragmented; some paragraphs are very short, which affects the flow. To improve, ensure that each paragraph develops a single clear idea fully before moving to the next. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, and the use of 'Yours faithfully' is correct for a letter starting with 'Dear Sir'.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'cultural heritage', 'opportunity', and 'possess'. There are a few minor errors, such as the spelling of 'causal' (which should be 'casual') and the phrasing 'key elements for this position', which is slightly unnatural. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations or topic-specific terminology related to museum work would help demonstrate a wider range and improve the professional tone of your application.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound, though there are some punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'history.I') and inconsistent spacing around commas. There is also a minor error in the phrase 'if I get fewer working hours', which could be phrased more naturally. You have good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is never obscured by these minor slips. Focusing on proofreading for punctuation and spacing will help improve your accuracy.
