Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this to inform you that I want to apply for voluntary work at the museum.

From last few years I am actively participating in voluntary activities across city and even in country with my group .According to me ,this work will help us to grow more and more even without getting any salary from government . For example , previous week our group cleaned the river in verka city that was contaminated by some stupid people and after that we felt like we had done something for our precious environment . So ,I feel like doing this unpaid work at museum is also part of my kindness.

I know you are looking for some particular skills in volunteers. And fortunately I have those ,I have good communication skills so if every any conflict will happen , I'll happily solve that. Moreover, I am good at managing team ,so you don't have to worried about that as well.

I am happy to start work from this week only. Also my team is available to work if needed'

Look forward to your positive response ,would be grateful for this opportunity.

Yours Sincerely

Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the motivation for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. However, the tone is inconsistent with the requirements of a formal application. The explanation of why you want to volunteer is somewhat informal, using phrases like 'stupid people' and 'part of my kindness,' which are not appropriate for a professional letter to a museum director. While the ideas are relevant, they lack the professional polish expected in a formal context. To improve, ensure that your language remains objective and polite throughout the letter, focusing on how your contribution benefits the museum rather than personal philosophical statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'For example' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and punctuation errors, such as the run-on sentence in the second paragraph and the inconsistent use of commas. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that connects logically to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and formal tone required for a job application. Phrases like 'stupid people' are inappropriate for this context. You rely on basic descriptors and some informal phrasing. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'from last few years' instead of 'for the last few years.' To improve, try to incorporate more professional vocabulary related to volunteering and museum work, and avoid colloquialisms that detract from the formal tone of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Issues include incorrect preposition usage ('across city'), subject-verb agreement errors ('if every any conflict will happen'), and punctuation mistakes, such as the missing closing quotation mark and the misuse of commas. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic grammar rules, particularly verb tenses and sentence boundaries, to improve your accuracy.
