Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in voluntary/unpaid work at Alberta Community Museum. Currently, I am a full-time fine arts student at the University of Alberta, and I have been looking for this kind of work for quite a long time.

By pursuing this work, I will be able to enhance my skills and get experience in decorating the interior of heritage buildings. Also, it will look good on my CV when I am applying for jobs in the future. I am friendly, enjoyable, and good at communication skills.

Moreover, I can also manage working at adminstrative position, and showing people museum with the elaborated explanation of every thing.

As of my availability, I am free every weekend and on weekdays after 4:00 pm. During university holidays, I can work extra hours.

Thank you for considering my application, and this will be a perfect opportunity for me.

I will be waiting for your reply.

yours sincerely,

Lavleen kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation as a fine arts student, list relevant skills such as communication and administrative ability, and provide specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific fine arts background would benefit the museum, as the current explanation is a bit general. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a central focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'As of my availability' to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the sentences within paragraphs are more tightly connected. The paragraphing is sufficient, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary', 'heritage buildings', and 'administrative'. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'enjoyable' to describe yourself (which is usually used for activities rather than people) and 'every thing' (which should be one word, 'everything'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated professional terminology would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your meaning is clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'manage working at adminstrative position' (should be 'an administrative position') and 'showing people museum' (should be 'showing people around the museum'). Punctuation is generally correct, though 'yours sincerely' should be capitalized. The errors present do not impede communication, but more consistent control over articles and prepositions would improve the accuracy of your writing.
