Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Smith,
I am writing to you for applying for the voluntary part-time position.
It is my dream to join surrey police to serve for the community and make peoples life better in Canada. Getting a voluntary experience would help get qualified for the surrey police academy.
I've done my studies in computer science, which I believe would be a great asset for me in this role. I have excellent hands on the lates version of the microsoft office system. I can work with the word files, make excel sheet to maintain items record and can also manage google sheets. Moreover, I have great art skills of making poster and templates using Canva and AI, and I can also handle some troubleshoot problems if the museum system servers get down.
I am available from August 4, 2026, Monday to Friday, morning 10 am to 2pm.
I'll wait for your response.
your faithfully
Charan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the reason for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. However, the content is slightly off-topic regarding the museum. You mention wanting to join the 'Surrey Police' and 'police academy' as your primary motivation, rather than focusing on an interest in the museum itself. While you do mention museum-related tasks like troubleshooting servers, the focus on police training makes the letter feel slightly misaligned with the prompt. To improve, ensure your motivation is directly linked to the museum's mission or your interest in history/art, rather than an external career goal. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal application.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'I am writing to', which help the flow. However, the transition between the first paragraph and the second is abrupt because the shift from a museum application to police training is not well-connected. The paragraphing is clear, but the overall progression of ideas could be smoother. Using more varied linking words would help connect your skills to the museum's needs more effectively, rather than just listing them.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary position', 'asset', and 'troubleshoot'. However, there are some inaccuracies and informal phrasing. For example, 'excellent hands on the lates version' is awkward; 'hands-on experience with the latest version' would be more natural. 'Make excel sheet' should be 'create Excel spreadsheets'. Additionally, the salutation 'Dear Smith' is incorrect for a formal letter where the name is unknown; 'Dear Sir or Madam' was provided in the prompt and should have been used. Improving your control over collocations will help raise your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing to you for applying' (should be 'to apply'), 'make peoples life better' (should be 'people's lives'), and 'I have great art skills of making' (should be 'skills in making'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors with capitalization (e.g., 'microsoft office', 'google sheets'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage to improve accuracy.
