Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to show my interest to do part-time voluntary work at the museum.
I am very interested to do voluntary work at the museum because I want to learn more about museum. Currently, I am doing certificate course in museum studies, and as a part of course requirement I have to complete 300 hours internship in any museum.
I have excellent oral and verbal communication skills. Moreover, I have also learned artifact preservation and museum technology during my study, which will be helpful to improve the museum.
I am available to start my work from next week. I can work there for up to 30 hours per week. I have availability on evenings and on weekends. I am living here locally, and the museum is just a few steps away from my home.
Please let me know if you need any additional information from me. I would appreciate your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Mayur Rabari

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, specifically mentioning your museum studies course and internship requirement. You also identify relevant skills, such as artifact preservation and communication, and provide clear availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific skills would benefit the museum, rather than just stating they would be 'helpful'. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to your qualifications and finally to your availability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Currently' to link ideas effectively. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics, which helps the reader navigate the information easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'artifact preservation' and 'voluntary work' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'show my interest to do' (should be 'express my interest in doing') and 'doing certificate course' (missing an article). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'learn more about museum' (missing an article) and 'as a part of course requirement' (missing an article). Additionally, 'I am writing to show my interest to do' is slightly awkward; 'I am writing to express my interest in volunteering' would be more natural. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and you show a good grasp of basic sentence construction.
