Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the voluntary work at the museum.
I want to work in the museum because I love learning about history and culture. Moreover, I am studying Anthropology at my university due to which I deal with a lot of artifacts and fossils. Over the years, I have studied various artifacts which have cultural and regional significance to human history. I want to spend my time at the museum to educate and inform guests about history.
As I have mentioned, I have prior knowledge of the displayed pieces at the museum. So, it will be easier for me to educate people without any training. I am a friendly, sincere and hard-working individual who can contribute significantly to the foundation by holding guided tours for the schoolchildren and visitors. Additionally, I have been doing volunteer work since high school because I believe in helping the community.
I am available from next week until the end of November. I can work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after 4pm until closing and I live nearby. I hope you will consider my application for the unpaid volunteer work. I look forward to hearing from you. Let me know if you need further information about me.
Kind regards,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, linking it to your Anthropology studies. You describe relevant skills, such as your knowledge of artifacts and your experience with volunteer work, and you provide specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task in a professional and structured manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from your motivation to your skills and finally your availability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'So' effectively to link your sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is clear throughout the text, making it easy for the reader to follow your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'artifacts', 'cultural and regional significance', and 'contribute significantly'. The language is precise and fits the formal tone of a job application. While the vocabulary is accurate and sufficient, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to reach the highest band. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication or cause confusion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response shows a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'As I have mentioned, I have prior knowledge...' and 'I am a friendly, sincere and hard-working individual who can contribute...'. The punctuation is generally accurate, and there are very few grammatical errors. The sentence construction is clear and supports the overall clarity of the letter. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more conditional or passive constructions where appropriate.
