Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to your advert on July 28th, 2026 requesting applications for part-time voluntary/unpaid work. I wish to apply for the position of part-time voluntary work in your museum.
The thing is, I have always loved artifacts and I basically grew up near a museum. I have grown to love the concept of preserving work of arts, historical artifacts like jewelry, coins, documents from the past...... It helps me connect with my culture and have a peek into what the times may have looked like then.
I have a set of skills that will come in very handy to the museum. I have done a lot of research on proper preservation and cleaning of historical artifacts hence I'll need little or no training to that effect. I am also quite good at organization and team work which will boost cordial relations with other workers in the museum.
I will be available to work on Tuesdays from 9 in the morning to 4 later in the day and on weekends from 10am to 5pm. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours Sincerely,
Omoikholo Ruth

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation, outline relevant skills such as research and organization, and provide specific availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal application, although the opening phrase 'The thing is' is too informal for a letter to a museum director. To reach a higher band, ensure that all language remains consistently formal throughout the entire piece, avoiding conversational fillers that detract from the professional tone required in a formal letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to personal motivation, skills, and finally availability. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'hence' and 'I am also', to link your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of ellipses ('......') is inappropriate for formal writing and should be replaced with standard punctuation or a concluding phrase to maintain a professional flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'cordial relations' and 'historical artifacts' are well-chosen. However, there are some instances of informal or imprecise word choices, such as 'The thing is' and 'a peek into'. Additionally, the phrase 'work of arts' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'works of art'. To improve, focus on using more precise, academic vocabulary and avoid colloquialisms that are not suitable for a formal application letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'training to that effect' (which is slightly awkward) and the incorrect pluralization in 'work of arts'. Punctuation is generally accurate, although the use of ellipses is non-standard. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is sufficient to communicate your points effectively without causing confusion for the reader.
