Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest and willingness to work as a volunteer staff in your museum. I have just completed a Bachelors of Art degree in History and as someone who is interested in culture and history, I suppose such opportunity would be a perfect start in my career journey. In addition, my invaluable volunteering experience under the Nigerian Red cross Society during my university days would be undeniably relevant to your organization.
My seamless ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively, work under pressure and break complex technical issues into real solutions make me stand out and fit for this role. Furthermore, having served as social media influencer and promoter of traditional sculptures and ancient pottery for the National museum in Lagos for about half a decade, I will employ the same skill in bringing your museum to lime light.
At the moment, I'm free to resume at any time if I am recruited. I have decided to dedicate the next one year to doing something that I genuinely love and care about. Other details about me and my experiences are clearly outlined in my resume.
Thanks in anticipation of your kind consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Prince.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, linking it to your academic background in History. You also provide relevant skills, such as teamwork and communication, and mention your specific experience with the National Museum in Lagos. Finally, your availability is clearly stated. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your past experience and the specific needs of the museum is even more explicitly detailed, as some parts feel slightly generalized.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'At the moment' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could vary your linking words slightly more to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel, but overall, the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'invaluable', 'undeniably relevant', and 'complex technical issues'. There is an attempt to use more sophisticated collocations, which is positive. However, there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'volunteer staff' (which is slightly redundant) and 'bringing your museum to lime light' (which should be 'limelight'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task and conveys your meaning precisely and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For instance, the sentence 'My seamless ability to work as part of a team... make me stand out' is a complex construction. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'Bachelors of Art degree' (should be 'Bachelor of Arts') and 'as social media influencer' (missing an article). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing a good level of control over English grammar and punctuation.
