Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Adam,

I am writing this email to request you for working as a a part-time voluntary work. I would love to work providing assistance to the visitors, and I have many other qualities to work here.

Considering the expectations, I have always thought about working in the art gallery as a volunteer. Moreover, taking charge and helping the visitors to explain the meaning and make them understand the art. Furthermore, knowing the deep meaning behind every painting is the real talent.

In terms of the expectations, I can convince the visitors to buy the painting; also, I have marketing skills to sell them at a better price through auction or in store. I can easily satisfy the person interested in the particular item that too at a better price.

It is beyond doubt that I can manage my schedule to work here all week long. Afternoon in weekdays, and the whole day on weekends due to my studies.

I appreciate your time to consider my point of hiring me as a volunteer. Let me know when I can start.

Yours sincerely,

Meet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained your motivation for volunteering, described your skills, and provided your availability. However, the tone is inconsistent; you begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam' but address the letter to 'Dear Adam', which is inappropriate for a formal application. Furthermore, the content regarding 'convincing visitors to buy paintings' is slightly unusual for a museum volunteer role, which typically focuses on education or preservation rather than aggressive sales. To improve, ensure your ideas align more closely with the typical expectations of a museum environment and maintain a formal, professional tone throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In terms of', which creates a logical flow. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly forced. For instance, the jump between paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could be improved by ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that links back to the main purpose of the letter. The use of linking words is adequate but could be more varied to improve the natural progression of your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'assistance', 'expectations', and 'marketing skills'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'request you for working' is grammatically incorrect and unnatural; 'apply for a position' would be better. Additionally, 'the real talent' is a bit vague in this context. You attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but it is occasionally misused. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word choices are appropriate for a formal job application letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. For example, 'a a part-time voluntary work' contains a repetition error and a misuse of the article. The phrase 'that too at a better price' is informal and grammatically awkward. There are also issues with sentence fragments, such as 'Afternoon in weekdays, and the whole day on weekends due to my studies', which lacks a main verb. While your meaning is generally clear, you need to work on subject-verb agreement and sentence completeness to improve your accuracy.
