Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I came to know that you are looking for volunteer in your museum. I would like to apply for this. I like to do something always in my spare time. Being a volunteer makes me happy as one do work without any expectation and salary. Therefore, I would like to be part of your team. I have done volunteering before in Dartmouth General Hospital during my school. Now I am working as customer service associate in Walmart.

Furthermore, I have very good experience with dealing customers, complete their queries, giving explanation of products. So, I think I can be a good match for this opportunity. Moreover, I am very confident in facing customers and solving their questions and doubts. Although, I always try to meet their demands. I have a job and my shifts are mostly in morning, so I can come during evening time in weekdays and I am available for whole day on Saturday.

I am looking forward to you response.

Yours sincerely,

Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, describe your relevant customer service experience, and provide specific availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal application. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention your experience at Walmart, you could have more explicitly linked those skills to the museum environment (e.g., handling inquiries about exhibits rather than products). To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons and descriptions are more fully extended and tailored specifically to the museum context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the use of these devices is occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is functional but could be smoother. The overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary', 'opportunity', and 'customer service associate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'complete their queries' (should be 'resolve their queries') and 'giving explanation of products' (should be 'explaining products'). Additionally, the phrase 'do something always' is unnatural. While your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of professional collocations would significantly enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I came to know that you are looking for volunteer' (missing article 'a'), 'as one do work' (subject-verb agreement error: 'does'), and 'I am looking forward to you response' (should be 'your'). The sentence 'Although, I always try to meet their demands' is incorrectly structured as a fragment. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for articles, subject-verb agreement, and correct sentence punctuation.
