Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing a letter to apply for a part-time voluntary job. I got to know about your hiring on the notice board. I am really interested in this opportunity because I was looking for a similar job to gain experience.
My interest in history and culture encourages me to do this job. I want to gain vast knowledge of museums and interact with people to explain the history of the particular artifacts. This museum is near my home, it will be easy for me to commute, and I can serve my local community by providing voluntary services.
My communication skills and friendly nature will help visitors better understand the exhibits. I am a quick learner. I know three languages: Hindi, English, and Punjabi, which will help me to communicate with most of the visitors clearly.
I am available on weekends and after 5 pm on weekdays. Because I have to attend my college on weekdays. I am punctual, so do not worry, I will always be on time.
I would really appreciate it if you would consider my application. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Your faithfully,
Saloni

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, highlight relevant skills such as communication and multilingualism, and provide specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how your specific interest in history would benefit the museum's visitors. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose and consistent tone throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'because' and 'which will help', to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider range of transition words or phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. For example, the transition between your skills and your availability could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'gain experience', 'commute', and 'punctual' are used accurately. There are some instances where word choice could be more precise or sophisticated, such as using 'hiring' when 'vacancy' or 'opportunity' would be more formal. You also use some repetitive structures. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to museum work, such as 'exhibits', 'curatorial', or 'visitor engagement', to show a higher level of lexical flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical errors, such as the sentence fragment 'Because I have to attend my college on weekdays', which should be joined to the previous sentence. Additionally, the closing 'Your faithfully' contains a minor error (it should be 'Yours faithfully'). Despite these slips, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would help elevate your score.
