Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The Director,

Sir,

I am willing to work in your gallery as a part time employee because I really wanted to do some charity work for our community in order to show some respect regarding the society.

Actually, I read about this opportunity in a newspaper few days ago and I find out that this can be for me. Moreover, I can definitely connect with the citizens through this voluntary work. However I have to skip my other routine but it could be beneficial for me in other ways.

In my previous job I had an experience as a tour guider, so it might be a positive point for your museum. Also, if you consider me as a fast learner then I can help in managing all departments such as, cleaning, time management, organising schedules and receptionist.

Although, I have my permanent job so I can only available on weekends from 8am to 4pm. I hope you will consider my application.

Thankyou

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your motivation, describing your skills, and stating your availability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, your explanation of why you want to volunteer is a bit vague, and your description of skills could be more detailed to show how they specifically apply to a museum setting. While you have covered the requirements, the tone is occasionally informal and lacks the professional polish expected in a formal application letter. To improve, try to expand on your motivations and provide more concrete examples of how your past experience as a tour guide would benefit the museum specifically.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Although' to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'I find out that this can be for me'. Additionally, the paragraphing is a bit inconsistent; the opening and closing sections are somewhat cramped. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that transitions smoothly into the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your intentions clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'voluntary work', 'part-time employee', and 'managing all departments'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'show some respect regarding the society' and 'tour guider' (which should be 'tour guide'). The range is somewhat limited, and you rely on basic phrasing to express your ideas. To improve, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to museum operations and professional communication to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally hinder the flow. For instance, 'I can only available' is grammatically incorrect (should be 'I am only available'), and there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency, such as 'I read about this opportunity... few days ago and I find out'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall quality. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct auxiliary verb usage will help you achieve a higher band score.
