Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Museum Director,

I am writing to express my interest in doing voluntary work at the museum. I recently learned that you are looking for people to help on a part-time basis, and I would be very pleased to have the opportunity to join your team.

I would like to volunteer at the museum because I am interested in history and enjoy learning about different cultures. I believe that working at the museum would allow me to gain useful experience, meet new people and improve my communication skills. I would also be happy to contribute to my local community in my free time.

I am a friendly, responsible and hardworking person. I have good communication skills and enjoy helping other people. I am also organised and able to work well both independently and as part of a team. In addition, I am comfortable using computers and can learn new tasks quickly. I believe these qualities would be useful when assisting visitors or helping museum staff with everyday activities.

I am available to work on weekday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at weekends. I would be happy to work two or three days a week, depending on your requirements.

I would be grateful if you could consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Suzzanne

You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, detail your relevant skills such as communication and computer literacy, and provide specific availability. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter of application. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task with a professional and polite approach.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'I believe', and 'I would be grateful if' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a formal application. Phrases like 'express my interest', 'contribute to my local community', and 'depending on your requirements' are accurate and natural. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is generally standard. You successfully employ complex sentences, such as 'I believe that working at the museum would allow me to gain useful experience, meet new people and improve my communication skills.'
