Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to apply to be a volunteer at the museum. These days, I am free due to summer vacations and I want to make the best use of this time.
I feel that my strong communication skills would be perfect for this job as it requires talking regarding history to the visitors. Apart from this, I am experienced in organizing events that involves working under pressure, meeting deadlines, cooperation and quality time management. These skills would make a great part of your current team while enhancing the experience of the visitors. Through dedication and punctuality, I would prove to be the best selecttion.
As far as the joining time is concerned, I can start within a week after the completion of my current volunteer work at the public library and commute would not be an issue.
I would be grateful if you could consider me for this memorable experience.
Yours sincerely,
Ifra

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills such as communication and event organization, and provided specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific skills would benefit the museum's daily operations, as the current explanation is a bit general. However, the task is fully covered, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'As far as... is concerned' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother, and the paragraphing is slightly compressed. To improve, ensure each paragraph has a distinct focus and use a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'dedication', 'punctuality', and 'commute'. There is a minor spelling error ('selecttion'), and some word choices could be more precise, such as 'talking regarding history' which sounds slightly unnatural. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to professional settings. For example, instead of 'make a great part of your team', you could use 'contribute effectively to your team'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
Your writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. There are a few minor issues, such as 'events that involves' (subject-verb agreement error, should be 'involve') and 'the best selecttion' (spelling). You have used some complex structures, but they are occasionally slightly awkward. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and prepositions. Most of your sentences are error-free, which is a positive sign.
