Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
Good day to you. I came across an advertisement, stating the museum needs part-time voluntary workers. I then decided to apply for the job.
I am currently a third-year university student, studying Museum studies. It has always been a passion of mine to work in a museum and familiarize myself with it. I am currently home for the summer holiday, and I think this will be the best time to work at the museum and gain useful experiences.
I will be a suitable candidate for the job as I have knowledge of the museum and its artifacts. I also have good communication and management skill which the job demands. I have a sound knowledge of computer operations and documentation. I hope to pass my knowledge of the museum and its artifacts to individuals who visit the museum and school children who come for excursions.
Once I am given the opportunity to work with the museum, I will be available immediately.
Thank you very much for your time, I do hope to get positive feedback soon.
Yours faithfully,
Osahon Abigail

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, specifically mentioning your studies in Museum Studies. You also outline relevant skills, such as communication, management, and computer literacy, and provide clear details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific skills would benefit the museum's daily operations, perhaps by providing a concrete example of a task you could assist with. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I also', 'Once I am', and 'I then decided' to link your sentences. To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'Given my background') to create a more sophisticated flow between ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of information is logical throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'artifacts', 'excursions', and 'familiarize'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for a formal context. There are a few minor issues with collocation, such as 'pass my knowledge', which would be more naturally expressed as 'share my knowledge' or 'impart my knowledge'. While the vocabulary is adequate, incorporating more precise or academic collocations would elevate the response. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any ambiguity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate and easy to follow. There are some minor errors, such as 'I also have good communication and management skill' (should be plural 'skills') and 'I do hope to get positive feedback' (a bit informal; 'look forward to receiving' would be better). You have good control over basic grammar, and your punctuation is generally correct. To achieve a higher band, aim to include a greater variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or relative clauses, to demonstrate more flexibility in your writing.
