Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I am writing to you to express my willingness to do some voluntary/unpaid work at the museum.
It would be very interesting to do some voluntary/unpaid work at the museum because I like history so much and I read a lot about history. In addition, I have a lot of free time that I would like to spend in serving and helping my community.
Moreover, I am a good fit to support with the museum work, as I am very familiar and knowledgable with the artifacts in the museum which will help with the work. This is due to the fact that I have visited the museum many times, whether alone or with my school as a kid. The work is related to admin tasks, then I have high skills in data entry or sorting artifacts or documents together.
I would be more than happy to share with you that I would be available starting tomorrow to support with the voluntary/unpaid work. To add, I can offer my support for four hours daily from 1PM to 5PM.
It would be my utmost pleasure to spend some time working in the museum.
Looking forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Ahmed Bahie

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, highlight relevant skills such as data entry and familiarity with the museum's collection, and provide specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are more fully developed. For instance, instead of simply stating you have 'high skills in data entry,' you could briefly describe a past experience where you utilized these skills to demonstrate your competence more effectively. Overall, the task requirements are met with a clear and relevant response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Moreover,' and 'To add' to link your sentences. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure supports the message effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary/unpaid work,' 'artifacts,' and 'knowledgeable.' While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat basic and lacks the precision or variety expected at higher bands. For example, phrases like 'I like history so much' could be elevated to 'I possess a profound interest in history.' There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, but incorporating more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terminology would enhance your score. Focus on using more precise adjectives and verbs to convey your enthusiasm and professional capability.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I am very familiar and knowledgable with the artifacts' (should be 'knowledgeable about') and 'The work is related to admin tasks, then I have high skills' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). You have good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. To improve, aim for more complex sentence structures and ensure subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are consistently accurate. The punctuation is generally correct and does not hinder readability.
