Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope you are doing well.
I am writing to enquire about part-time voluntary work at your museum.
Actually, I am pleased to know that you are looking for someone who are interested in unpaid voluntary work.
Last week, I got my summer holidays from the school. I was also seeking for work where I can get experience, and manage my time for something productive.
In addition, I really like to share that I have several skills associated with this job such as, good communication skills, basic computer knowledge, file management and can also assist tourists to explore museum.
Furthermore, I want to discuss about my availability.
I am available to work on the weekdays from 9am to 5pm.
Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I would really appreciate it if could allow me to work here.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Yours faithfully,
Rajvir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, list relevant skills such as communication and file management, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for instance, mentioning a specific interest in the museum's exhibits or history would make your application more persuasive and demonstrate a deeper engagement with the task requirements. Overall, the content is relevant and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat fragmented; some sentences stand alone as single-sentence paragraphs, which disrupts the flow. To reach a higher band, try to group related ideas into more substantial paragraphs. For example, combine your motivation and skills into one body paragraph, and keep the availability details in a separate, concise section. This would create a more professional and cohesive appearance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enquire', 'productive', and 'associated with'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'got my summer holidays', which is slightly informal for a formal application. Additionally, the phrase 'someone who are interested' contains a subject-verb agreement error. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise, formal collocations would enhance the quality of your writing. Focus on using more sophisticated alternatives to common verbs to show a wider lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical slips that affect accuracy. For example, 'someone who are interested' should be 'someone who is interested', and 'seeking for work' is incorrect; the verb 'seek' does not take a preposition. Additionally, 'I would really appreciate it if could allow me' is missing the subject 'you'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb patterns will significantly improve your accuracy.
