Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my interest in doing part-time volunteer work at the museum located near my residence. I am seeking a part-time opportunity to gain experience related to historical and cultural concepts. Moreover, I am majoring in historical studies, this unpaid volunteer work would provide adequate learning while working.

Admittedly, this job will assist me in enhancing my knowledge and interest in areas like historic art and patterns used in ancient times. Additionally, this job will allow me to interact with different individuals which would help in improving my communication skills and gathering several ideas about each aspect in the museum.

I am a hardworking and responsible person and pay full attention to details and given instructions to do tasks on time. I am available Monday to Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. I could assist on weekends and holidays, depending on your requirements.

I would be grateful if you would consider my application. I am open to discuss more about the schedule further if required.

Looking forward to hear from you. I hope I will have this opportunity to volunteer in the museum.

Yours faithfully,

Navjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted your relevant skills as a history student, and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning your interest in 'historical and cultural concepts,' you could briefly specify a particular era or type of exhibit that fascinates you to demonstrate a more personal connection to the museum's mission.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Additionally,' and 'Admittedly' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the progression between sentences within paragraphs is smoother. For example, the transition between your major and the benefits of the job could be more fluidly connected to create a more cohesive narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'historical and cultural concepts' and 'enhancing my knowledge' are appropriate for the context. However, there is a reliance on somewhat generic language. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise collocations related to museum work or volunteering, such as 'curatorial assistance,' 'public engagement,' or 'gaining practical experience.' You also had a minor error in the closing: 'Looking forward to hear from you' should be 'Looking forward to hearing from you.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There is a minor comma splice in the first paragraph: 'I am majoring in historical studies, this unpaid volunteer work...' which should be two separate sentences or joined by a conjunction. Additionally, ensure consistent verb forms after prepositions, such as the gerund after 'looking forward to.' Despite these occasional slips, your control of grammar is generally good, and your meaning is never obscured by these minor errors.
