Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Malhar Bhavsar and I am an art student from York University. I am writing this letter to apply for the recently posted voluntary part-time job on your website.
In addition to that, I am currently on my summer vacation for three months. So, I would like to add some voluntary experience in my resume.
Also since my childhood days, I find museums fascinating and I visited all the museums in our state Ontario. Apart from that, I have customer service experience at Hilton Hotel which will be relevant for this role and I can provide you references also.
Lastly, I would like to start as soon as possible because my summer vacation has just started from today and I can work till three months. My working hours availability is from 9 AM to 9 PM.
I am hoping for a positive response from you soon. Thank you for the consideration.
Yours Faithfully,
Malhar Bhavsar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, highlight your customer service experience at the Hilton, and provide specific availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention your interest in museums, expanding on what specific aspects of museum work interest you would have provided a more compelling application. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the transition between paragraphs could be more professional to better suit the context of a formal application.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that', 'Apart from that', and 'Lastly' to move between ideas. While these are functional, they are somewhat repetitive and mechanical. The paragraphing is clear, which helps the reader follow your points easily. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on a list-like structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary experience', 'fascinating', and 'relevant'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and occasionally imprecise, such as 'voluntary part-time job' (volunteering is typically not referred to as a 'job'). There are no significant spelling errors, and the language used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to professional applications, such as 'contribute to the museum's operations' or 'demonstrate a strong commitment'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I would like to add some voluntary experience in my resume' (should be 'to my resume') and 'my summer vacation has just started from today' (redundant phrasing). Punctuation is generally correct, and these minor errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on refining your use of prepositions and ensuring that your verb tenses are used consistently throughout the letter.
