Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir/madam
I am writing this letter to express my interest in participating for the voluntary part time work at Mission museum which is just around the corner from where i live. I saw the advertisement while I was going through my instagram and it immediately drew my attention.
I recently moved in this neighborhood and I do not know much about this place. So, volunteering at this museum will give me an opportunity to build a network with the people of this community. I also love investing my time in voluntary activities which I believe enhances my soft and hard skills. The best part is the museum is near to my place, so I do not need to travel much.
I have a delightful personality and my attention to detail can actually help in coordinating with the staff and the visitors, and maintain the sanitation and quality of the museum respectively. I am a fast learner, so I believe training me will also not be an issue. Furthermore, I have a good social media presence, so I can boost the museum's content and ultimately help in increment of customers.
I can work any time on the weekends and as for the weekdays, I can devote my evenings. You can schedule me with your requirement and and my availability.
I hope you would consider me as a candidate for volunteering in your museum. I look forward hearing from you.
Best regards,
Shirisha Kayastha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills such as your social media proficiency and attention to detail, and provided clear availability for the role. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a local museum. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing salutations are perfectly aligned with the prompt's requirements (e.g., 'Dear Sir or Madam' was requested, but you wrote 'Dear sir/madam'). Overall, the response is purposeful and fully covers the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'In addition' to link your points. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is clear throughout the letter, and the reader can easily follow your argument from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'build a network', 'delightful personality', and 'devote my evenings' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'increment of customers' (which sounds unnatural; 'increase in visitor numbers' would be better) and 'participating for' (should be 'participating in'). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, there is room for more sophisticated collocations to elevate the tone. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I recently moved in this neighborhood' (should be 'to this neighborhood') and 'I look forward hearing from you' (should be 'I look forward to hearing from you'). Punctuation is generally correct, though capitalization of 'i' and 'instagram' needs attention. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion or impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on preposition usage and consistent capitalization in formal writing.
