Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in the part time volunteer work that has been advertised in the local newspaper. Presently, I am persuading bachelors in history , as a part of program I need to work 40 hours of unpaid work to finish the course. Additionally ,the History of the Canada museum is one of my favourite museums in Canada. So , if I would have given a chance to work there would be an amazing opportunity.

It is my pleasure to share my previous experience and skills. I used to be the sales representative for One of the community centre in my area, where I used to connect with all members and made sure everyone takes part in social works and community welfare. Moreover, I am currently a class representative where I am a leader of all the activities happening in my section of the class. These experiences enhanced the communication skills, increased awareness of importance of community work. Qualities that I have learned so far will not only support to get more guests in the museum but also will help to spread the awareness of history among them.

I am very excited for this opportunity and would be available to start this month if needed. As I am in my last year of bachelor’s, I am available on weekends.

Yours Sincerely,

Dimpal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, describe your relevant experience as a sales representative and class leader, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, while you mention your experience, you could briefly elaborate on how your specific communication skills would benefit the museum's visitors. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'Moreover,' and 'As I am' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation, such as the spacing around commas (e.g., 'Additionally ,the'). Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring consistent punctuation would enhance the professional quality of the letter. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'express my interest' and 'social works and community welfare' are appropriate. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'persuading bachelors' (likely meant 'pursuing a bachelor's degree') and 'History of the Canada museum' (which should be 'Canadian Museum of History'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over academic and formal terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if I would have given a chance' (which contains a grammatical error; it should be 'if I were given the chance'). There are several recurring errors, including subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'the importance of community work'). While your meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for verb tenses and articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
