Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing very well. I am writing this to inform you that I am interested to do part-time voluntary work at your museum.
I am Tabassum Patel, and I am a student in the University Canada West, and studying art culture in literature. Therefore, I would like to work in your art library in order to study and obtain experience about different arts and cultures.
I have a excessive amount of knowledge regarding different pieces and flowers, thus it could be great benefit for your museum. For instance, when others visit the museum then I can share my knowledge regarding flora and fauna. Moreover, I have good communication skill that might be another reason to work in your art gallery.
In addition, if you give me opportunity to work with you, then I would like work on weekends. Because I have to attend full-time classes on week days.
I look forward to your prompt response. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Tabassum

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining your motivation, describing your skills, and stating your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention having knowledge of 'flora and fauna,' it is not entirely clear how this relates to an art museum setting, which makes the connection slightly weak. To improve, ensure your supporting details are more directly relevant to the specific context of the museum's operations. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore,' 'Moreover,' and 'In addition' to link your ideas. While these are functional, the progression between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between your personal background and your specific skills flows more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'obtain experience' and 'consideration.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'excessive amount of knowledge' (which sounds negative; 'extensive' would be better) and 'flowers' (which is likely not the best term for an art museum context). You also have a minor error in 'art culture in literature,' which is slightly confusing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations related to professional applications would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am interested to do' (should be 'interested in doing'), 'in the University' (should be 'at the University'), and 'give me opportunity' (missing an article: 'the opportunity'). Additionally, 'I would like work' should be 'I would like to work.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of your letter. Focusing on articles and correct verb patterns after 'like' or 'interested' will help improve your accuracy.
