Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I came across an job advertisement published in today's newspaper for your museum. It is mentioned that you are currently looking to hire part-timers or volunteers.

I am interested for apply as a volunteer for your museum. I am completely aware that this position is unpaid one, but still I am invested in this profile because of my background as a community worker.

As a community worker, I used to volunteer in Edmonton Museum for past three years. My primary role was to guide people and children who are living with physical disabilities. I have done a professional certification related to interacting with people living with mental and physical disabilities. I am aware that this role does not include any remunerations, and I still want to join because I believe in good deeds.

Since, your museum is located right opposite to 'School of Specials' which is dedicated to specially abled children, I am confident that my skills and experience will be a perfect fit.

I am available to work only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with flexible schedules.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted your relevant background as a community worker, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, you could further develop the connection between your previous experience and the specific needs of the museum. For example, you mention your certification in disability support; explaining how this would specifically benefit the museum's visitors would make your argument more persuasive and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the task. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Since' and 'As a community worker', to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the overall structure is quite straightforward. Increasing the range of cohesive devices would help the text move more naturally between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'remunerations', 'advertisement', and 'community worker' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'interested for apply' (should be 'interested in applying') and 'unpaid one' (should be 'an unpaid position'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and grammatical structures related to vocabulary. Expanding your use of more sophisticated, topic-specific vocabulary would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I came across an job advertisement' (should be 'a job'), 'interested for apply' (should be 'interested in applying'), and 'Since, your museum' (the comma is unnecessary). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional phrases following adjectives. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move toward a higher band.
