Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well.
I am writing this letter to apply for a volunteer position available at your museum which I found on LinkedIn. For your information, I am in my last semester of college and looking for a volunteer work experience to support my resume in future.
To describe my profile, I would like to introduce some of my strengths which makes me a suitable candidate for this role. Firstly, I love to interact with people, due to that I have cultivated my communication skills in a way that I can handle all type of conversations. Another positive skill I have is presentation. I am always getting 1st prize in my college while presenting projects. I hope this makes me a perfect candidate for this job.
Since I am in my last semester, I am available anytime except my college hours which is going to be 7:00 am to 2:00 pm from Monday to Friday. Also I am available effective immediately. Please let me know from when can I start working. You can contact me on my cell number [redacted phone].
Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state your motivation for volunteering, describe relevant skills such as communication and presentation, and provide specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more sophisticated; for instance, instead of simply stating you have presentation skills, you could briefly explain how those skills would specifically benefit the museum's visitors or staff. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Another', and 'Since', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your linking words to avoid a slightly mechanical feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cultivated', 'suitable candidate', and 'effective immediately'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'support my resume' (better: 'enhance my resume') and 'all type of conversations' (should be 'all types of conversations'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on more natural phrasing will help elevate your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'which makes me' (should be 'which make me', referring to 'strengths') and 'from when can I start' (should be 'when I can start'). Additionally, 'which is going to be' is slightly informal and could be phrased more concisely. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would improve your score.
