Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to request you to hire me as an part time voluntary work in the museum.

I am Mahek Patel living i chittod gadh near by the Castle museum. Since i have been shifted here i would love to work as an volunteer in the museum. Because i am a very humble or kind person that did not do work for the money or ask someone for the money. I am very well in communication like i would explain each and every detail of the thing very clearly to someone. Moreover, i am very much in for the history since my school time so i already know about this museum structure and the ancient work such as clothes , jewellery, instrument and many more.

I have a college from Monday to Friday and Saturday there is a half day . So i can available on weekends from Saturday afternoon to whole Sunday.

Hoping for your positive reply toward my request.

Yours sincerely,

Mahek Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the reason for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why you want to volunteer is a bit simplistic, focusing on being 'humble' rather than a genuine interest in the museum's mission. The description of skills is relevant, but the language used to describe your knowledge of the museum's collection is slightly informal. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are expanded with more sophisticated reasoning and professional tone, particularly when explaining your suitability for the role.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a standard formal structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'Moreover' and 'Since' are used, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some sentences feel disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition from your personality to your communication skills and then to your historical knowledge feels abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. You rely on basic descriptors such as 'humble', 'kind', and 'very well'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'shifted here' instead of 'moved here' and 'I am very much in for the history' which is informal and non-standard. While the meaning is clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice that detract from the professional tone required for a formal application letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect article usage ('an part time', 'an volunteer'), subject-verb agreement ('I am very well in communication'), and preposition errors ('living i chittod gadh'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for small errors would significantly improve your score.
