Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to express my interest in the part-time position available as a front desk attendant at the museum.
I am in the final year of my business administration undergraduate degree, and this job will give me a chance to have on-hand experience, which will be better for my resume and would be the foundation of my career.
I have exceptional customer service and communication skills that I gained while working as a part-time crew member at McDonald's during my summer break, which are crucial aspects of this job. Moreover, I am familiar with the museum very well, as I am a resident of this town and reside nearby, and commuting to the museum would be easy for me.
As the museum closes at 10:00 PM, my availability would be from 4 PM till the closing on weekdays, after my college, and on weekends, I am available for the whole shift.
I would be really grateful if you considered my application for this role, and I am confident that I would be an asset to the team and museum as well.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Darren Keams

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, specifically linking it to your career aspirations in business administration. You provide relevant skills gained from your previous experience at McDonald's and clearly outline your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific skills would benefit the museum's operations, rather than just stating they are 'crucial'. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As the museum closes' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could vary your transition words slightly more to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel in the flow between sentences. However, the overall structure is clear and the message is coherent throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal application, such as 'exceptional', 'crucial', and 'consideration'. The language is natural and fits the context well. There are no significant errors in word choice. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or precise collocations related to professional settings, such as 'gaining practical experience' instead of 'have on-hand experience'. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'I am in the final year of my business administration undergraduate degree, and this job will give me a chance...' is well-constructed. There are very few errors, and those present do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, ensure you maintain consistent control over complex structures and consider using a wider variety of subordinate clauses to demonstrate greater flexibility. Your current level of accuracy is high.
