Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the motivation for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the motivation is mentioned multiple times as 'exposure and knowledge' and 'insight into public tourism'. While the task is fulfilled, the tone is slightly informal and lacks the professional polish expected in a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, the ideas should be expanded with more specific detail rather than repeating the same concepts in different phrasing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The letter lacks clear paragraphing, which is essential for a formal letter. It is presented as a single block of text, which hinders the logical flow. While there is a basic attempt at sequencing ideas, the transition between sentences is often abrupt. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and sometimes inaccurately (e.g., 'ultimately which will'). The lack of clear paragraph breaks makes the text feel disjointed. Improving the structure by separating the introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a closing statement would significantly improve the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is significant repetition of words like 'museum', 'work', and 'exposure'. Some collocations are unnatural, such as 'occupational work' (instead of 'full-time job') and 'spare my self' (instead of 'commit'). While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the student relies on basic phrasing. To improve, the student should incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to volunteering and museum operations, and focus on using more natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in punctuation and grammar. Common issues include missing spaces after commas, inconsistent capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'), and awkward phrasing like 'it will be more feasible for me to do volunteer at this museum'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, proper punctuation, and subject-verb agreement to improve accuracy.
