Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding part-time unpaid work as I knew that you are hiring those people who are willing to do volunteer work at museum. I want to apply for that job as i do have interest in this feild and before i did job as a volunteer in another museum.

Also, I am good in communication and I can easily adapt to new environment which would be convenient for me to start new work as volunteer in your museum. I can do paper work too because i do have experience in customer service .

Furthermore, I would like to share some details with you regarding my availability. So, I am available on Monday , Tuesday and weekends too at anytime. I can start doing work as volunteer from starting of September and this would work for me.

I look forward for your response.

Your faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your motivation for volunteering, mention relevant skills like communication and customer service, and provide specific availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For example, while you mention 'customer service' and 'paper work', expanding slightly on how these specific tasks would benefit the museum would have moved this into a higher band. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it lacks some of the professional polish expected in a formal application.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also' and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some sentences feel slightly disjointed. For instance, the transition between your skills and your availability could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could benefit from more sophisticated linking words to improve the logical progression between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary', 'communication', and 'availability'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I knew that you are hiring those people' (should be 'I understand you are seeking volunteers') and 'do job as a volunteer' (should be 'worked as a volunteer'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Improving your grasp of formal collocations would significantly enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('at museum' instead of 'at the museum'), incorrect verb tenses ('I did job' instead of 'I worked'), and punctuation issues (e.g., 'Monday , Tuesday'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles in a formal context.
