Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for a part-time voluntary work as visitor representative in Royal museum.
To begin with, I was looking to spend my summer holidays to gain some work experience. I saw the advertisement for the voluntary work available at our local museum. I have pursued my education in History Civics. Furthermore, I have excellent communication and organisational skills which will greatly benefit for visitors to gain valuable insights in a museum. Therefore, I believe this opportunity would enable me to enhance my customer service skills. In addition, I will be available to work on weekdays, particularly between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. I would be grateful if you could provide me about 25 hours per week.
Please contact me on my email [redacted email]. Kindly let me know if you require any additional information from me.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Payal Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills such as communication and organization, and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your background in 'History Civics' specifically prepares you for the museum environment, providing a more detailed connection between your studies and the museum's needs. Overall, the response is focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In addition' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your motivation, skills, and availability. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For instance, the link between your education and your skills could be tightened to improve the overall progression of ideas. Nevertheless, the information is easy to follow and the structure is sound.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'voluntary work,' 'visitor representative,' and 'valuable insights.' There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'provide me about 25 hours,' which should be 'provide me with about 25 hours.' You also use 'pursued my education in,' which is slightly unnatural; 'studied' or 'have a background in' would be more idiomatic. While you successfully convey your meaning, incorporating more precise collocations or less common lexical items would elevate your score. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'apply for a part-time voluntary work' (should be 'apply for part-time voluntary work' or 'apply for a part-time voluntary position') and 'benefit for visitors to gain' (should be 'benefit visitors by helping them gain'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional phrases. Your control over basic grammar is good, and you show an attempt at more complex sentence construction.
