Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in part-time volunteer work for museum which is building nearby the community.

I am excited for museum which will be open soon. It is almost two years are taken to build this property. But still it is under-construction due to fewer employees are participating. In order to help them, I decided to volunteer myself and also encouraged my friends to serve the society with unpaid work. Being an architecture, it is easy for me to understand the infrastructure of the museum. Moreover, I can provide you advise regarding interior and furniture as a piece of an art. During my volunteer, I can use my experience skills and implement at work such as cooperation, painting and guidance. Additionally, more volunteers together can be able to finish three hours work within one hour by helping each other.

I would like to mention about my availability especially on weekend. Rest of the days, I can join for part-time as mainly in the evening due to my full day job. Even, my friends will also join to build museum as a volunteer.

I hope you would take my suggestion into your consideration and act accordingly.

Yours sincerely,

Arpan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the reason for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While you mention your background in architecture, the connection between this and the museum's needs is slightly vague. The suggestion that you and your friends can finish three hours of work in one hour is a bit unrealistic and detracts from the professional tone required for a formal application. To improve, ensure your ideas are more practical and directly aligned with the museum's operational needs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'However', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between your architectural background and the offer to help with painting. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, but there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'Being an architecture' should be 'Being an architect', and 'provide you advise' should be 'provide you with advice'. The phrase 'implement at work' is also slightly unnatural in this context. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, you need to focus on using more precise terminology and ensuring that word forms (noun vs. adjective) are used correctly to achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the museum'), verb tenses ('two years are taken'), and sentence construction ('due to fewer employees are participating'). Some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack necessary prepositions. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
