Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to apply a job in the museum which requires a part-time voluntary worker.

As soon as I came across this job opening, I was immediately drown towards it because it matches my interest. I have always been interested in doing unpaid work in order to help authorities to manage public tourist attractions, and also in providing information about my hometown as I am well aware of many.

I not only have good communication skills but I am also able to explain every art monuments which is located in the museum. As it has been a long time since I started study French and speaking with native speakers I can fluently talk to a person who speaks French.

As per my schedule, I would be available for afternoon shifts on weekdays, and I can work at any time on weekends. I would be greatfull If timing of the job, including the responsibilities are provided so I can choose flexibly and manage my other day to day tasks.

I look forward to hearing back from your side.

Yours faithfully,

Dharmveer Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills such as communication and language proficiency, and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on why you are particularly passionate about this specific museum or how your knowledge of the local area would benefit visitors. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As soon as' and 'As per my schedule', which help the flow of the text. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some areas. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing is consistently clear throughout the letter to enhance the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'authorities', 'public tourist attractions', and 'fluently'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'apply a job' (should be 'apply for a job') and 'drown towards it' (should be 'drawn towards it'). Additionally, 'art monuments' is not the most natural collocation for museum exhibits. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage to reach a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'since I started study French' should be 'since I started studying French', and 'I would be greatfull If timing of the job... are provided' contains errors in spelling and subject-verb agreement. While these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for verb forms and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
