Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding the part-time volunteer job opening at your museum. My name is Navi and I am a student of Bachelor of Arts in History at Lawrence University. I want to apply for this work because of my upcoming final exam. With the experience of working in museum, I can understand the importance of antique materials and get to know about historical items. This can be beneficial for me in the history exam.

I already have experience working in local charity which helps people who struggle with daily needs. I believe that my skills such as organization, communication, time management and emotional intelligence make me the best candidate for this job.

I am available from tomorrow until next month. I have attached my resume with this letter with the details of my availability and timing. I hope you consider my application and select me for the voluntary position.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Navi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation, which is linked to your history studies, and you list relevant skills such as 'organization' and 'time management'. You also provide your availability. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the connection between your history exam and the museum work is a bit simplistic. To reach a higher band, you could expand on how your specific academic background would add value to the museum's operations rather than just focusing on how the museum benefits your exam preparation. Overall, the tone is appropriate for a formal application.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am writing this letter regarding' and 'I believe that', which help the flow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited in variety. To improve, try to use a wider range of linking words or phrases to connect your sentences and ideas more fluidly, such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'In addition to my academic background'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary position', 'antique materials', and 'emotional intelligence'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'student of Bachelor of Arts' (should be 'a Bachelor of Arts student') and 'working in museum' (missing an article). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more specific collocations related to professional applications would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear, and your meaning is never in doubt. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'working in local charity' (missing 'a') and 'get to know about historical items' (slightly unnatural phrasing). Punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with greater precision. Overall, the grammar is functional and does not impede communication.
