Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for a voluntary work at the museum. I have been interested in history since I was a child. In addition, working in a museum will broaden my history knowledge.

I like to keep things organized, this may suit over there. As people prefer to visit clean and organized museum rather than untidy. A reason behind that is, an organized place demonstrate the knowledge with great depth. Apart from this, I have a great communication skill and better historical knowledge therefore, I can work as a guide too. This quality not only help in engaging people but they will receive a valuable knowledge.

I am working as a physiotherapy assistant and have a job in the morning as a result, I am mostly available in the evening and able to do the unpaid work during that time.

Thank you so much for your cooperation. I will wait for your prompt reply.

Yours faithfully,

Riya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, describe relevant skills such as organization and communication, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, when mentioning your historical knowledge, you could briefly specify an area of interest or a past experience to make your application more persuasive. The response is well-structured and addresses the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Apart from this', and 'as a result' to connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with sentence flow, such as the comma splice in 'I like to keep things organized, this may suit over there'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring punctuation is used to support the flow of ideas would help you achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary work', 'broaden', 'engaging', and 'cooperation'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'broaden my history knowledge' (should be 'broaden my knowledge of history') and 'demonstrate the knowledge with great depth' (which is slightly awkward). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'a voluntary work' (should be 'voluntary work' or 'a voluntary position'), 'better historical knowledge' (should be 'a good knowledge of history'), and 'this quality not only help' (should be 'helps'). Additionally, there are some punctuation errors, such as the comma splice mentioned previously. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles will significantly improve your grammatical accuracy.
