Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to show my interest in your recent advertisement for part-time voluntary/unpaid opportunity at museum.

I would like to inform you that I am a student at Concordia university and I am in last year of my under graduation course which requires 4 months of social voluntary work to get my degree. Recently, I came up with your requirement for the museum work and I am very interested in this position.

To add in more, I have previously worked for 1 year in social community which enhanced my communication skills along with good team worker and helpful for visitors.

My availability is in evening during the weekdays as I attend my course in the afternoon and I am available whole day in the weekends.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am waiting for your response.

Yours faithfully,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the reason for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why you want to volunteer is tied strictly to a university requirement, which is a bit functional. The description of skills is also brief; phrases like 'good team worker' are grammatically awkward and lack depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on how your specific skills would benefit the museum, rather than just stating you have them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'To add in more' are not natural in formal English. The transition between sentences could be smoother; for instance, the connection between your university course and your interest in the museum could be better linked to show a more cohesive narrative. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the flow lacks sophistication.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic phrasing, such as 'I am writing this to show my interest' and 'I am very interested'. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'came up with your requirement' (which should be 'came across your advertisement') and 'social community' (which is vague). To improve, try to use more specific professional vocabulary related to volunteering and museum work, and ensure that your collocations are natural for a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'voluntary/unpaid opportunity at museum' is missing an article ('the museum'), and 'I am in last year of my under graduation course' should be 'the last year of my undergraduate course'. Additionally, 'along with good team worker' is grammatically incorrect as it lacks a verb or proper structure. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of articles and sentence construction.
