Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to the recent openings for voluntary/ unpaid work at museum as I was looking for some community service in nearby area for my college intership.
To begin with, services that are not paid gives a sense of belonginess in our life. As museum is the tourist attractions so this will be good opportunity to serve people.
I would like to showcase my skills and qualities by having a small exhibition of my paintings at the museum community hall. As a token of love I will give them few of my paintings.
I am available during weekends from morning to afternoon. In weekdays I have to attend my classes until evening so It will be slightly difficult for me to cope up with my studies.
I hope you will consider my request favorably. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours Faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points, though the development is somewhat uneven. You explain your motivation and availability clearly. However, the section regarding your skills and qualities is slightly off-target; instead of describing transferable skills (such as communication, organization, or customer service), you focus on offering your paintings for an exhibition. While this is a creative idea, it does not fully demonstrate how you would contribute to the museum's daily operations as a volunteer. To improve, focus on skills that directly assist the museum staff, such as guiding visitors, administrative support, or event coordination, to better align with the professional nature of a volunteer application.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the prompt. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, 'To begin with' is a standard transition, but the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'As museum is the tourist attractions', where the lack of articles and the plural noun choice disrupt the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would help the text progress more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'community service', 'internship', and 'favourably'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'belonginess' (belonging), 'tourist attractions' (a tourist attraction), and 'cope up with' (cope with). These errors occasionally draw attention but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional terms related to volunteering would also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding articles ('at museum', 'in nearby area') and subject-verb agreement ('services that are not paid gives'). Punctuation is generally correct, though the closing 'Yours Faithfully.' should not have a period after the word. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammar rules, specifically the use of definite and indefinite articles and ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects. Reducing these frequent minor errors will significantly improve the overall quality of your writing.
