Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to apply for a part-time voluntary work at Western Development Museum.

I recently completed my diploma in Admin Assistance, and I would like to gain practical experience; therefore, after seeing your posting about museum needs a volunteer who can handle admin and customer service duties, I decided to send my resume.

In my course I have learnt billing process, handling customers phone calls and inquiries, and doing inventories. Moreover, I am fluent in English language and computer skill. Which unable me to contribute well in handling museum's front desk duties.

As I am working Mondays to Wednesdays at my other job, I would be available to give my full day availability on Thursdays and Fridays for 0900hrs to 1700hrs. Please send me your email address so I would send my detailed resume with my college reference numbers.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

John Peter

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state your motivation for volunteering, outline your relevant administrative skills, and provide specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on why you are specifically interested in this museum, rather than just stating you want practical experience. This would demonstrate a more personal connection to the task and show a greater ability to develop ideas fully. Overall, the response is purposeful and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct part of the prompt. The use of transition words like 'Moreover' and 'therefore' helps guide the reader through your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your skills and your availability could be improved with a more natural linking phrase. Paragraphing is used correctly, and the overall progression of ideas is clear, which is sufficient for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'administrative assistance', 'inquiries', and 'contribute'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'Which unable me', where 'enables' would be the correct verb form. Additionally, 'billing process' and 'doing inventories' are slightly informal. To improve, try to use more precise collocations and ensure that your word forms are accurate. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'apply for a part-time voluntary work' should be 'apply for part-time voluntary work' (uncountable), and 'Which unable me' is a sentence fragment that contains a verb error. There are also minor issues with prepositions and articles. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
