Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
i hope this find you interesting, i am writing to express of my interest to do the part time job of a volunteer at the museum. I am genuinely thrilled to be part of this team and i believe i will be an excellent fit as the work place is very close to where i live currently.
the reason to express my interest genuinely on the job is because of my passion for artifacts and my enthusiasm for both cultural diversity and love for history. this will relief me of the mental health of being lonely as my children are far from home. this will offer me an opportunity to interact other people and also tourists.
As for my suitability, I hold a degree in and have worked currently as a part-time tutor and mentor, i have retired as a lecturer who worked at the national university camp, where i tutored students on history and international relations and also worked as a docent in the school museum.
also for my availability, i will always show up by september and october as those are the periods tourist flood in to observe some sculptures as well as taking their children around to observe and learn some histories.
i hope for your favorable response.
yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained your motivation, described your relevant background as a lecturer and docent, and specified your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening is slightly awkward. To improve, ensure that the connection between your personal situation and the museum's needs is more professional. While you mention your background, you could expand slightly on how your specific skills in history and international relations would benefit the museum's visitors. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers all requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As for my suitability' and 'also for my availability,' which help guide the reader through the text. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by minor grammatical issues and punctuation errors. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between your personal motivation and your professional qualifications is smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'artifacts,' 'cultural diversity,' 'mentor,' and 'docent.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the mental health of being lonely' and 'tourist flood in.' These do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more natural phrasing for professional correspondence. For example, instead of saying 'the reason to express my interest genuinely on the job,' a more natural phrasing would be 'I am writing to express my sincere interest in this position.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include 'i hope this find you interesting' (should be 'finds'), capitalization errors (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'), and awkward phrasing like 'this will relief me of the mental health.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, consistent capitalization, and the correct use of verb tenses. Proofreading for basic mechanical errors would significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
