Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope this message finds you well. I am Bhoutik Gohil. I just live across the street. I got learned that you are looking for someone who can do part-time voluntary work for the museum.

However, I am very much interested for this voluntary work position. Currently, I have an full-time job as an Customer Service Representative at Central Museum.

As a CSR, I have come in contact with many to tourists and visitors ; they have motivated me to learn more about our history. Furthermore, I would like to know more about our history which I can find at your museum.

Moreover, I will be available for weekends only because on weekdays I have my full-time job at Central Museum.

Please let me know if this schedule works for the museum. Thank you for your time and consideration. I will be looking forward for your prompt response.

Best Regards,

Bhoutik Gohil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the reason for wanting to volunteer, relevant skills, and availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention your current job as a Customer Service Representative, you could have elaborated more on how specific skills from that role—such as conflict resolution or public speaking—would benefit the museum. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening is slightly informal. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is expanded with more detail to demonstrate a more thorough engagement with the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure of your application. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the use of 'However' at the start of the second paragraph is slightly unnatural in this context, as it does not contrast with the previous sentence. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the logical flow between sentences is more seamless and natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'voluntary work', 'Customer Service Representative', and 'prompt response'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I got learned' (should be 'I learned' or 'I found out') and 'interested for' (should be 'interested in'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic phrasing. Incorporating more precise, topic-specific vocabulary would help elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I just live across the street' (slightly informal phrasing), 'an full-time job' (incorrect article usage), and 'come in contact with many to tourists' (unnecessary 'to'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there is an unnecessary space before the semicolon in the third paragraph. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor errors in articles and prepositions will improve your score.
