Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the part-time voluntary job at your museum. I am always interested in learning about history and serving to people, therefore, after watching your advertisement in a local newspaper yesterday made me excited.
I believe working at a museum is a great chance to develop essential life skills such as great communication and management through interacting and serving to customers. Moreover, experiencing a real work atmosphere would be a great asset for my career prospects.
I have developed basic required skills and qualities through my past experience as a receptionist at a hotel. In addition to this, I am an enthusiastic, confident, good manager and leader. Hence, I consider my self a best candidate for this role.
I would be available in the evening after 5pm until the closing time during weekdays and anytime during weekends. I would be more than happy to assist in emergency situations anytime if you need beyond the given availability.
Thank you for considering my application and I am looking forward to hearing prompt response from you.
Yours sincerely,
Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills from your previous experience as a receptionist, and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could briefly mention a specific historical interest or a particular museum task you are eager to assist with to show deeper engagement with the role.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a central topic, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition to this', and 'Hence' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall progression of information is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'career prospects', 'enthusiastic', and 'voluntary'. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'serving to people' (should be 'serving people') and 'my self' (should be 'myself'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more precise professional terminology related to museum work or customer service would enhance your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as the sentence fragment '...after watching your advertisement in a local newspaper yesterday made me excited' (the subject 'watching' makes the sentence grammatically incorrect). Additionally, 'a best candidate' should be 'the best candidate'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding run-on sentences or fragments. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
