Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the part-time volunteer position at your museum. I have always been interested in learning about history and serving people. Therefore, after seeing your advertisement in a local newspaper yesterday, I became very interested in this opportunity.

I believe that working at a museum would be an excellent opportunity to develop essential skills, particularly communication and organisational skills, through interacting with and assisting visitors. Moreover, gaining experience in a professional work environment would be a valuable asset for my future career.

I have developed several relevant skills through my previous experience as a hotel receptionist. In addition, I am an enthusiastic, confident and responsible individual who enjoys interacting with people. I believe these qualities would make me a suitable candidate for this role.

I would be available on weekdays from 5 p.m. until closing time and at any time during weekends. I would also be happy to assist in emergency situations outside these hours if required.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, citing an interest in history and personal development. You describe relevant skills gained from your background as a hotel receptionist, such as communication and organization, and you provide specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task in a professional manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' is effective and helps the reader follow your arguments easily. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, which enhances the overall readability of the text. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving logically from your interest to your qualifications and finally to your availability. The structure is coherent and professional throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal application. Phrases like 'valuable asset', 'suitable candidate', and 'professional work environment' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely without any errors in word choice. The language is natural and fits the context of a formal job application perfectly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of sentence structures used throughout the letter. You successfully employ complex sentences, such as 'I believe that working at a museum would be an excellent opportunity to develop essential skills... through interacting with and assisting visitors.' Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing a high level of control over English syntax. The tone remains consistent and formal, which is essential for this type of correspondence.
